SMELLS OF CHRISTMAS 3 cinnamon sticks 3 bay leaves 2 orange slices 2 lemon slices 1/3 cup whole cloves Combine ingredients in a mesh bag or tulle and secure with string (NOT ribbon). Place in ziplock plastic bag; refrigerate until ready to use. Place 1 quart water in saucepan; remove from plastic bag and place in water. Simmer all day, adding water as needed. Can be used several days. Note: When I give this as a gift, I first dry the orange and lemon slices.
Play Clay Holiday Ornaments 2 c. baking soda (1lb. box) 1 c. cornstarch 1-1/4 c. cold water 1. Stir soda & starch in pan. Add water & cook on med. heat stirring constantly. In 10-15 min. when it's the consistency of mashed potatoes, turn over onto a plate & cover with a damp cloth. When cool, pat until smooth. It's ready to use or store in tightly sealed plastic bag. Bring to room temp. before using. *To make different colors, add a few drops of food coloring to the water (you might want to make half batches if you want a few different colors. Or you can paint when dry. Add glitter when dry with glue. *Roll out to 1/4" on waxed paper. Cut with cookie cutters or freehand and use a toothpick to make a hole for hanging. *Drying: Microwave at med. power for 30 seconds. *Finishing: Dip into clear varnish or use 2 coats of clear nail polish. Kids love to do this for gifts or your tree, their teachers, friends. Use your imagination and have fun!
People and Pet Biscuits 3 1/2 cups flour 2 cups rye flour 1 cup corn meal 2 cups cracked wheat 1/2 cup dry milk 4 tsp. salt 1 envelope active dry yeast 1/4 cup very warm water 2 - 3 cups chicken broth or other liquid (e.g. veggie water) 1 large egg - beaten with 1 tablespoon milk 1. Mix flours cracked wheat, corn meal, dry milk, and salt in large bowl. 2. Sprinkle yeast over warm water and stir in small bowl. 3. Add yeast and 2 cups of broth to dry ingredients. 4. Mix well with hands - dough will be "very" stiff. 5. If necessary add a little more broth. 6. Roll out dough on floured surface to 1/4" thickness and cut into desired shapes. 7. Place on ungreased sheets. 8. Brush with egg and milk mixture. 9. Bake 45 minutes at 300 degrees. 10. Turn off oven and leave in oven overnight.
Pet Cookies - (4-1-98) 1 jar strained baby meat 6 heaping tablespoons wheat germ 4 heaping tablespoons powdered milk Form 5-6 balls and press on greased cookie sheet. Bake 10-15 minutes in oven at 350 degrees.
Dog Bones 1 3/4 c.. flour 2 T. wheat germ, toasted 1/2 c. brown sugar 1/4 c. sesame seeds Rind of one lemon 12 T. butter or margarine 1 egg yolk 1/2 c. ground walnuts 1/2 T. vanilla extract Combine all ingredients. Knead until thoroughly blended. Divide dough into 6 parts. Roll each part to resemble a cucumber. Wrap loosely in wax paper. Freeze. When needed, thaw and slice into 1/2 " thick slices (across roll). Make bone shapes of each slice. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place cookies on an ungreaded cookie pan. Bake about 13 minutes. Makes 6 or 8 cookies per roll. You can also roll this dough and use cookie cutters of bones, cats, hydrants, etc.
Liver Biscuits 1 pound of raw beef liver 1 cup white or yellow corn meal 1/2 cup flour 1 to 3 teaspoons of garlic powder or 2 or 3 cloves of fresh garlic. Put liver in blender or food processor (with fresh garlic, if used) and blend until liquified. Mix with dry ingredients. Spread on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes and 350 degrees. Cut while still warm. A pizza cutter works best. Place in small bags and freeze for later use.
Beef Biscuits 4 cups white flour 2 1/2 cups oatmeal 4 T. Safflower Oil 1 egg 2 cups water 2 T. brown sugar 1 beef bouillon cube Mix all ingredients and shape into bones. bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour.
Cheese Pasteries for Dogs 6 tablespoons fat (oil or margarine for example) 1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 cup finely grated cheddar cheese 1 small garlic clove, mashed or minced. Blend fat and cheese until smooth. Stir in garlic, then mix in flour. Mixture will be crumbly. Roll mixture into shope of a log and chill until firm. cut slices from roll and place on un greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 until slightly brown. about 10 minutes.
Elfen Dog Loaf 2 liters water 500grams brown rice. 2 large potatoes 2 large carrots 500grams pumpkin 2-3 cloves garlic 6-8 leaves silver beet (can substitute cabbage) 250 grams pasta (preferably wholemeal) 2 cups rolled oats 2 cups wholemeal flour (quantity used will depend on moisture content of vegetables) 3 eggs 500grams mince or liver 1tsp kelp or 1/2 tsp salt 1comfrey leaf Handful of fresh herbs (parsely, chives, sorrel, fennel ) choped roughly. Put rice in water . In a large saucepan,boil for 10-15 minutes. Mean while, coarsely chop all vegetables ,leaving on skins where posible .Add the vegetables ,garlic , Kelp , or salt and pasta to the rice.Cook for Further 10 minutes. Take the pot off heat and leave to cool for 10-15 minutes. Now add rolled oats chopped herbs , mince flour and eggs .Mix all ingredients to gether . Add more flour if needed to form a fairly solid mixture. It holds together better once cooked if not to sloppy before cooking .Spoon into oiled and floured loaf tins. bake at 180 C for approximately 1 hour,or until done. Remove from oven , leave for 5minutes then turn out .Return to oven for 5-10 minutes to firm. This can be stored in the deepfreeze Mince is ground hamberger 500 grams approximately 1/2 pound.
Milk Replacer Formula for puppies 10 oz. evaporated milk (whole fat or part skim -- do not use all skim) or goat's milk 3 oz. sterilized water (baby water or boiled water) -- delete if using goat's milk 1 egg yolk (raw) 2T regular mayonnaise (optional) 1 cup whole fat yogurt (whole fat or part skim -- avoid all skim) Place all ingredients in a blender and mix (or use a wire whisk) till well blended. Use all formula within 7 days. Warm formula to puppy body temperature before feeding. Always discard formula leftover at a feeding. This formula is thick and so is best administered by stomach tube. If using a bottle, you may need to enlarge the hole slightly. It provides 11 calories per cc.
Weak Puppy Booster This formula is meant to be used on newborns who are chilled, weak or otherwise compromised. This formula should be administered every 1-2 hours (or more often) by stomach tube and the puppy should be warmed slowly. Once the puppy begins to maintain a normal body temperature, regular feeding can resume. NEVER FEED A CHILLED PUPPY MILK REPLACER. 8oz. lactated ringers solution or sterilized water 1 tablespoon white Karo syrup or white sugar (do not use honey) OR Substitute plain, unflavored Pedialyte Mix ingredients and warm to body temperature. Preferred administration is stomach tube (to ensure correct dosage). Feed 1/2 cc per 2 oz. of body weight once per hour. If puppy is very weak, you may half the dosage and feed twice as often. This formula should be followed up with milk replacer as soon as the puppy is maintaining normal body temperature. This formula should not be fed exclusively for more than 8 hours.
